Changes to NHS Dentistry November 2023
From 1st November 2023 there are significant changes to NHS Dentistry. These changes have been imposed by the Scottish Government and apply to all dental practices providing NHS treatment.
The most significant change is the timing of recall examinations. From 1st November the standard recall examination period will be 12 months. In certain circumstances your dentist may request a review appointment before 12 months but it is important to note that this is not a full examination - the Scottish Government are only funding full examinations at 12 months.
Full examinations at 6 months will be available on a private basis. You may wish to considering joining our Denplan Essentials monthly payment plans that provide 2 full examinations and hygiene visits per year.
We can appreciate that many of you will be upset by the 12 months recall period, as are we. This is completely outwith our control. We would encourage you to voice any concerns to your MSP.
Fees have also changed for many treatments including those that previously didn't incur charges. Some treatments are no longer available on the NHS. Fees for NHS treatments are set by the Scottish government and not ourselves.
Routine examinations will still be available free of charge and those who are entitled to help with NHS costs will still receive this. Full details of all changes are available online on the NHS inform website.
These are the most significant changes to NHS dentistry for a generation and we appreciate your patience and cooperation as we all adapt to this new system.
