Donald qualified from Dundee University in 1986, from where he moved into general practice in Aberdeen, completing a 6-month vocational training course. In March 1988 Donald opened the Stenhousemuir practice, linked it with his father's practice and the rest they say is history.
Donald is committed to post-graduate education having completed the career pathway as outlined by the Faculty of General Dental Practice. Donald is one of a handful of dentists in the UK who has obtained this status. In 2016 he was awarded a Fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and in 2017 was bestowed the same honour from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
With a deep-rooted love of dentistry and a passion for his role, Donald has fulfilled many different roles within the wider profession. Having been an office bearer for the Stirling and Clackmannan BDA, Treasurer of the Scottish Dental Fund, membership and Chair of Forth Valley General Dental Practitioners Sub-Committee and similarly with the Forth Valley Local Dental Committee. Clinical roles out-with the practice have included a clinical attachment to Glasgow Dental Hospital doing orthodontics, having worked within the Scottish Prison Service treating inmates and working within a wholly private clinic in Edinburgh. Donald has also been used as an expert witness for the courts. All of these roles have helped develop and enhance the skills that are required to understand and deliver quality healthcare.
Donald also served as Chairman of the Scottish Dental Practice Board for seven years. The Scottish Dental Practice Board is the statutory body accountable to Scottish Ministers for delivering payments to dentists and ensuring appropriate governance and probity within NHS dentistry in Scotland.
Donald is married to Lynn and has two children Gemma and Jack and grandson Maxwell. His hobbies out with dentistry (when he has time) are rugby, golf, skiing, sailing, sea kayaking and canoeing. Summer 2022 Donald took part in the Clipper Round the World Yacht race as part of the crew of Punta Del Este and in doing so, fulfilled a childhood dream of crossing the Atlantic Ocean.
